For energy-intensive sites, rising electricity costs and grid constraints can make future growth increasingly difficult. Icknield Biogas, a South Oxfordshire anaerobic digestion site producing enough renewable gas to heat 6,000 homes, faced both: growing electricity demand and a grid connection that limited its ability to expand using conventional renewable solutions.
Wattstor’s answer was a fully integrated 1.2MW solar PV and 2.5MW battery storage system, delivered under our Price Protect tariff. Icknield buys all its electricity directly from Wattstor through a long-term supply agreement; Wattstor finances, builds and operates the assets behind the scenes.
Behind the scenes, Wattstor’s intelligent energy management system, Podium, manages the site in real time, monitoring operational electricity demand, onsite renewable generation and battery performance to optimise how energy is produced, stored and consumed across the site.
The Results
The site is fully operational, delivering approximately 25% lower electricity costs and a long-term price cap that protects the site against future market volatility, all without any upfront capital investment from the customer.
