Growth in Europe’s green economy signals rising demand for energy efficiency and sustainable estates

Employment in Europe’s environmental economy has grown significantly over the past decade, underlining the increasing importance of energy efficiency and sustainability for estates and facilities managers across both public and private sectors.

New data from Eurostat shows that green jobs in the EU rose from 3.6 million in 2014 to 5.8 million in 2023, an increase of 2.2 million roles. This represents an average annual growth rate of 5.5%, with employment rising by a further 4.2% between 2022 and 2023 alone.

The environmental economy includes activities such as renewable energy generation, energy efficiency improvements in buildings, and waste and resource management: areas that sit at the core of modern estates and facilities management strategies.

The figures reflect a broader structural shift. As organisations continue to prioritise decarbonisation, demand is growing for expertise in areas such as building optimisation, low-carbon technologies and energy performance management.

The data also highlights strong growth in economic output from the sector, which reached €1.33 trillion in 2023, nearly doubling since 2014. This expansion reinforces the commercial as well as environmental importance of sustainable infrastructure investment.

At the same time, wider Eurostat energy data shows that Europe remains heavily reliant on external energy sources, with around 57% of energy needs met through imports. This dependency continues to drive the push for greater efficiency, resilience and localised energy solutions across estates.

Sustainability is no longer a standalone initiative but a core operational priority, impacting procurement, building design, maintenance and long-term asset strategy.

The growth of the environmental economy is also creating new expectations around skills and capability. Organisations are increasingly required to manage complex energy systems, integrate renewable technologies and deliver measurable reductions in energy use and carbon emissions.

As regulatory pressures and energy costs continue to evolve, the expansion of green jobs across Europe signals a long-term shift in how buildings are designed, operated and maintained, placing energy and sustainability expertise firmly at the centre of estates management strategy.
