Howard Tenens Logistics and Calor BioLPG: Driving a Renewable Future in Logistics

Howard Tenens Logistics has taken a bold step in its decarbonisation journey, becoming Calor’s first logistics customer to power all Calor-supplied sites with 100% BioLPG. The move demonstrates how practical renewable fuels can deliver immediate carbon savings without disrupting operations.

A progressive logistics partner

Founded in 1953, Howard Tenens is one of the UK’s largest privately owned logistics businesses, operating across 23 sites with over 4.7 million sq. ft of warehousing and more than 200 vehicles. Known for its innovative and sustainable approach, the company has long sought practical ways to reduce emissions while maintaining operational excellence.

Meeting the carbon challenge

Forklift trucks (FLTs) are essential in warehousing but traditionally powered by diesel or LPG. While LPG already cuts emissions versus diesel, Tenens wanted to go further. Working with Calor, the company switched from a 40% BioLPG allocation tariff to a 100% renewable tariff — a first for the logistics sector.

Seamless transition, measurable impact

BioLPG is chemically identical to conventional LPG, meaning no changes were needed to Tenens’ existing infrastructure. Across six sites, the company now consumes around 36 tonnes of BioLPG annually, fuelling FLTs through both bulk tanks and cylinders. Calor’s smart auto-ordering ensures uninterrupted supply, critical in a time-sensitive industry.

“Returning to standard LPG wasn’t an option,” says Anna Rickard, Environmental Manager at Howard Tenens. “Switching to 100% BioLPG tariff aligned perfectly with our strategy and means all our customer operations run on renewable fuel at the six sites we own and operate.”

In addition to carbon savings, BioLPG enables quick refuelling and extended FLT run times compared with electric alternatives, offering both environmental and operational benefits.

A wider sustainability strategy

The BioLPG shift forms part of a phased decarbonisation plan that also includes solar PV, HVO and biomethane trucks, with electrification a longer-term goal. For Tenens, the partnership with Calor goes beyond fuel supply:

“Calor ticks all the boxes,” says Anna. “We value partners who share our values and work collaboratively to meet joint goals.”

Leading the way

As an early signatory of Logistics UK’s Route to Net Zero pledge, Howard Tenens’ switch to 100% BioLPG shows how logistics companies can act now. It’s a blueprint for sustainable operations — practical, scalable, and already delivering results.
